May 30, 1927 — May 22, 2022

Grady Varnell “Shorty” Warren passed away peacefully in his home Sunday, May 22, 2022 at the age of 94. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Westwood Baptist Church beginning at 11:30 am. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm led by Bro. Richie Davis. Graveside burial services will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens led by Bro. Philip Marshall.

Mr. Shorty worked the past 40 plus years as a Process Server for the Lauderdale County Courthouse, which he considered his second family. Anyone would know him by his “I HUNT U” car tag. He also served his community by working security for Matty Hersee Hospital and was a Constable for Lauderdale County, along with being a Weigh Station Officer for the MS Dept of Transportation. He had many stories of chasing down big trucks, drag racers, and those leaving the bars and juke joints. Among his jobs, he also ran a loan business, drove pulpwood trucks, and provided lawn care service. For his church family at Westwood Baptist, he was affectionately known as the “candy man.” He served as a Deacon, Trustee, Director of Training Union, Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School Teacher.

He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Barbara Barton Warren; children, Cathy Poole Wheat (Harry), Johnny Warren, Day Beard, Ronny Warren (Cher); grandchildren, Stephen Poole, Suzanne Marshall, Lindsey Beard, Madison Warren Taylor (Clint), Lauren Murphy; great grandchildren, Isa Marshall, Jonathan Marshall, Kingston Murphy, Finley Murphy, Sadie Ray Taylor and his sister Louise Reynolds.

He is preceded in death by his parents James and Annie Warren; siblings, Lillian Boatner, Geneva Reynolds, Inez Chesney, Edna Reynolds, Earline Chesney, Ercelle Rigdon, Orien Warren, Jimmy Warren, Billy Warren, Leon Warren and son-in-law Tony Poole.

Pallbearers are Wayne Coley, George Culpepper, Terry Dearman, James Farrior, Sonny Hopkins, Andy Jones, Jonathan Marshall and Gary Stokes.

The family would like to thank Ariel Chavez, Tiffany Savell and Southern Care Hospice for their compassionate care over the past few weeks.
