Edward Sharp

June 29, 1935 — January 21, 2022

Edward Levell Sharp, 86, passed away on January 21, 2022 in Laurel, MS. He was known for his sense of humor and quick wit.  He used to joke that the rich Sharps spelled their name with an “e” at the end and we were the poor Sharps. Years later he obtained a copy of his birth certificate only to find his recorded name was misspelled with an “e”. So I suppose, Daddy, we were rich! Rich not in the monetary sense, but rich in so many ways. He provided a wealth of love and unwavering support to his family. Levell was a hard working man who despite his 8th grade education and struggling farm upbringing provided a very comfortable life for his family.

He was a self-taught intelligent man who met every challenge put before him. He worked from a very early age on tug boats, Lake Pontchartrain Causeway construction, shipyard welding, to owning a small trucking business, and later retiring from Roadway Trucking Company after 27 years of service. He was a proud member of Teamsters Local Union 891 and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local No. 37.

Levell was raised in a Christian home, growing up in Sharp’s Chapel Church of God in Bush, LA. A born-again Christian, he later became a member of Daniel Memorial Baptist Church in Jackson, MS until his death. He cherished his home church and church family. Although declining health prevented church attendance for the last four years, Levell prayed daily and sought spiritual guidance through televised sermons, gospel music and daily prayer. He always quoted the “Sinner’s Prayer”. He was confident in his salvation and in this our family finds peace.

Levell is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sue Burney Sharp, an Alabama girl who he met in New Orleans. They married in 1956 and together raised three children. They created a lifetime of fun memories of RV traveling, ship cruising, and traveling to Bluegrass and Gospel Music Festivals.

Levell leaves behind children Regina Sanders and husband Joey of Willis, TX, Pam Clarke and fiancé Kennon Davis of Laurel, MS, and Edward Sharp and wife Lynn of Jackson, MS. He will always be remembered for sharing fishing and hunting trips, binge-watching all night Westerns, music listening and leisurely enjoying the outdoors.

Levell took extreme pride in his grandchildren Allen Sanders, Matthew Sanders (wife Blake), Crystal Sharp Vicary (husband Chase), Hunter Clarke and Leah Clarke Busselli. His grandchildren have fond memories of being chased by PawPaw’s shaving lathered face and getting it smeared on theirs, catching that first fish and being surprised with a counted trophy, and Mississippi State football games.  A special memory was seeing the joy of PawPaw meeting his great grandchild, Peyton, in November. He leaves behind two great-grandchildren Peyton Vicary and Braden Buzzelli.

He will be missed by his beloved pet, Sassy.

He is survived by brother Rupert “Boot” Sharp (Debbie), sister-in-laws Joyce Sharp Fitzmorris and Dorothy Sharp, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Levell was preceded in death by his parents Leslie Atwood Sharp and Edna Glass Sharp, brothers Herbert, Lee, Raymond, Jerry and infant boy Sharp. Levell was also preceded in death by son-in-law Richard Clarke.
