Obituary

Ms. Dot passed peacefully on April 26, 2022, at home in the presence of her family. Dot was born on the family farm in Virginia and lived there with her doting father, Joe Dale and two brothers, Elbert and Alvin. Dot and her brothers and father worked on the farm as so many other families. She was treated as the princess and called “Dottie” at that time by those who knew her well. She played outside and enjoyed being outdoors. She was not afraid to get her hands dirty with either her chores or fishing, playing with her brothers or taking care of animals. Despite being born just after the Great Depression, she lived an idyllic childhood on the farm. In the meantime, she continued to get her education. She was a member of various high school clubs and was elected as a beauty in the homecoming court. She graduated from Crozet High School in 1951.

She later settled in Meridian, MS with her husband Neil Page Ballard and three children, Benford “Bennie”, Monica, and Becky. Dot worked tirelessly for Southern Pipe and Supply Company for 42 years and continued to move up within company during that time. She was a devoted employee of Sammie and Marty Davidson during her time at Southern Pipe.  While at Southern Pipe, Dot met and developed a friendship with William Jolly, Angela, and their family. She became a life-long family friend and was fondly called “Ms. Dot” by their children.

While in Meridian she joined Northcrest Baptist church and was a member there for over 50 years. She was an active member of the church and continued to join the social activities held there well into her senior years. She made many friendships within the church, and she maintained many of those friendships until her passing.

Dot would bring her children as she traveled around the United States and Puerto Rico to explore and visit family throughout the U.S. Though most of the trips centered around Virginia, she also took her children to many of the bigger cities. She enjoyed the trips as much as they did, and this became a big part of their lives as they were growing up. Dot was an “on the go” person and she was always ready to see new things with her children.

Ms. Dot was a member of the Lauderdale County Country Dancers led by Carol Hosch in her later years. She enjoyed going on trips with the group and square-dancing on the stage. She was also a donor to the Humane Society. Her love and care of animals was never surmounted. She had a collection of cats she fed regularly around her own home. She finally found her life-long friend in her dog, Roxie, a Weimaraner.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Lee Dale and brother, Alvin Dale. She was also preceded by two of her children, Benford Neil Ballard and Monica Ballard Killen. Dot is survived by her brother, Elbert Dale. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Lynn Everett, her four grandchildren, Jessica, Lindsey, Megan, and Natalie. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Scarlette, Eli, Stella, and Becca. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
