Ruth “Virginia” Haguewood, 97, of Meridian, passed away on August 4, 2025, at Baptist Anderson Hospital in Meridian, Mississippi. Known as Virginia, she was born August 07, 1927, in Bay City, Texas, to Harry Sylvester Mosley and Ruth May Mosley.
A self-described tomboy as a child, Virginia left home at 17 to attend college in Kingsville, Texas. There she met a handsome 19-year-old sailor named “Buddy” from Meridian, Mississippi. They eloped two months later and were married on January 26, 1945, enjoying nearly 51 years of marriage before Buddy’s passing in 1996. After Buddy’s discharge from the navy, they lived briefly in Bay City, Texas, before relocating to Corpus Christi, Texas, when Buddy got a job with PPG Industries. PPG sent Buddy and “Runt”, as he called her, all over the country; including Minnesota, New Jersey, Michigan, California, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, before retiring to Meridian in 1983.
In Meridian, Virginia was a faithful member at Central United Methodist Church. She also was active as a Lady Lion for the Lion’s Club and with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). She loved to travel and visited many cities across Europe. At 75-years-old, she journeyed to Egypt, where she rode a camel named “Mickey Mouse.” A devoted Pittsburgh Penguins fan, she checked off a bucket list item at age 89 by riding the Zamboni during intermission at a Predators–Penguins game in Nashville. An avid reader and life-long learner, she loved her family and was a wonderful example to them.
Virginia is survived by her five children, Pamela Fulks (Richard), Sondra Nelson (Robert), Delia Labutka (David), Gene Haguewood, and Lisa Sollie (Scott); grandchildren Ramona Pipes (Russell), Drusilla Fulks-Haner, Solisa Mathews (Teddy), Helms Fulks, Royce Fulks, Quenna Botkin (Landon), Christopher Nelson (Cari), Benjamin Nelson, Samantha Couch (Scott), Justin Sollie (Abby), Jeremy Sollie; great-grandchildren Austin Pipes (Tiffany), Alex Pipes, Reese Botkin, Isabel Nelson, Xavier Nelson, Marley Sollie; great-great grandchild, Elijah Pipes.
Pallbearers will include Helms Fulks, Austin Pipes, Christopher Nelson, Benjamin Nelson, Justin Sollie, and Jeremy Sollie.
She was preceded in death by husband Benjamin Eugene Haguewood, Sr. (Buddy), and brother, Charles Robert Mosley.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church immediately followed by funeral services at 11:00 with Rev. Dr. Scott Wright officiating. Graveside services for the family will be in Magnolia cemetery. Arrangements are provided by Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Central United Methodist Church and Friends of the Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library.
