Ola Mae Amis

March 21, 1935 — May 20, 2023

Ola Mae Amis

Ola Mae Hollingsworth Amis was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She departed this life on May 20, 2023, at the age of 88. She was born on March 21, 1935, in Newton County, Mississippi, to the late James O. and Vada Gressett Hollingsworth. Ola Mae married Edsel Maurice “Reece” Amis on March 29, 1959, and they were married for 45 years until Reece’s passing in 2004.

Ola Mae devoted herself to being a loving mother to her four sons, Daniel, Allen, George, and Mark. Ola Mae never missed an opportunity to tell her family how proud she was of them. No matter how busy life could be, she was always there to lend a listening ear and focus her attention on their needs.

The fruits of the Spirit were evident in her life, most notably through her patience. This was never more apparent than when she reminisced on stories of trips or events with Reece and their four sons. Ola Mae’s kind and loving spirit was apparent wherever she was.

She had many hobbies and passions in life. She loved cheering on her family members and the MSU women’s basketball team. Her love of sports and games was not limited to being a spectator. She was a fierce competitor no matter if the game was golf or Uno. She continued to pursue her love for the game of golf in her life culminating with her being awarded Decatur Country Club Women’s Champion in her 80s.

Ola Mae created beauty around her. She loved spending time in her garden, playing piano, crocheting and quilting, and tending to “Reece’s Rose Garden.” She made thoughtful keepsakes, often in the form of quilts or afghan blankets, for her family and friends.

After retiring, she often volunteered for Clarke Venable Baptist Church where she was able to devote time loving on congregation members and supporting the church.  She often played the piano for residents of local nursing homes.  As a gifted pianist, she spent many weekends with Reece and other friends at “singings” at many churches.

As a beloved member of the Decatur, Mississippi community since 1959, Ola Mae touched the lives of many with her gentle nature and warm smile.  Ola Mae Amis will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her family and friends take comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her husband in heaven.

Ola Mae was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Francis Jones, her brothers, Marshall and Ed Hollingsworth, grandchild, Terry (TJ) Johnston, and great grandchild, Paisley Amis.  Ola Mae is survived by her sons, Daniel (Melody), Allen (Kim), George (Leslie), and Mark (Tammy); grandchildren Deana (Ronnie) Brewer, Kris Amis (Jessica), Corey Amis (Whitney), Colton Amis (Megan), Colby Amis (Haley), Ashley Mixon (Ray), Jonathan Amis, McKenzie Amis, Grayson Amis, and Bella Amis; great grandchildren, Tristan Johnston (Cailee), Aaron Moreno, Adrian Moreno, Wyatt Temple, Amos Johnston, David Amis, Mariah Amis, Birdie Amis, Matthew Amis, Hayden Amis, Hadley Amis, Eliza Amis, Posey Amis, Hallie Mixon, Haden Mixon, Grayson Mixon, and great-great grandchild Nina Johnston.
