Mollie Monk

March 3, 1918 — March 18, 2020

Mollie Ruth Lide, Monk, age 102, passed away on March 18, 2020 at Bedford Care Center in Marion Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents Maggie Molpus Lide and Thomas Jefferson Lide, Her husband Ira Monk, brothers Adrian, Herman, Bernard, Thomas and Richard as well as her sister Lucille Williams.

Mollie held graduate degrees in Home Economics and Chemistry from MS Southern and MS State Univ. She also completed course work at Univ. of Tenn., Fla. State Univ., Samford Univ., MS College, Meridian Jr College, and North Fla. State College. She taught on both High School and College levels, volunteered in numerous groups, enjoyed Duplicate Bridge, and traveled extensively. While in Ireland, she kissed the Blarney Stone making her even more gregarious!

Mollie taught Sunday School for over 50 years, was instrumental in forming Grace Fellowship Baptist Church where she was ordained a deacon and served as Moderator. Mollie had a marvelous sense of humor, saw the funny side of and loved to say that she was the “first female Monk to be ordained a deacon in a Baptist Church!”.

The family would like to thank the staff at Bedford Care and Sta-Home Hospice for their compassion and care. The family is also eternally grateful for the care, kindness, and love provided by Rachel Lide Shelby, who has been Mollie’s guardian for the past 15 years.

A graveside service will be officiated by Leon Ballard, Mollie’s former pastor, at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Pine Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery in Lake, MS. There will be no visitation nor funeral due to the Corona virus outbreak. Donations may be made in memory of Mollie to Grace Fellowship Baptist Church, 7330 MS 493, Meridian, MS 39305.
