Mattie Meacham

September 3, 1926 — November 19, 2020

Mattie Sue Meacham was called to her eternal resting place on November 19, 2020. She entered this world on September 3, 1926, born to Elbert and Jessie Gunn.

Nicknamed by a college classmate as “Pistol”, Mattie Sue Gunn was brought up in Lauderdale County where she graduated from Dixie Highway School. She graduated from East Mississippi Junior College and Mississippi State College for women, where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education, in 1949.

In the meantime, she met the man of her dreams, Mr. Dan Meacham, of Kemper County. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before his death.

Ms. Sue had a total of 37 years of her teaching career in Noxubee and Kemper County public school systems. Ms. Sue dedicated her life to her family, her church, and her community. The lives she touched and influenced in a positive manner is unnumbered.

She was an active member of Scooba United Methodist Church, Fellowship Circle of United Methodist Women, Kemper County Retired Teachers Association and Okobosh Supper Club.

She is survived by her daughter Brenda Cherry and her husband Danny, two granddaughters April McIlwain and her husband John and their two children Evan and Alex of Pelahatchie, MS and Susan Stevens and her husband Wesley and their son Gunnar of Meridian, MS.

The family expresses special thanks to her caregivers Dorothy Cockrell, Betty Glaspie and the staff of MS Care Center of Dekalb.

The family requests memorials be made to Scooba United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 112, Scooba, MS 39358.

The family will have a private graveside service with Rev. Zac Cox officiating.
