Services for Mary Ruth Briggs will be held Thursday, July 10, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at Scooba Community Church (formerly United Methodist) with Bro. Jamie Bailey officiating and Bro. Dewayne Rigdon assisting. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery in DeKalb. Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes are honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
Ms. Briggs, 79, of Scooba, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2025, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Mary Ruth graduated from DeKalb High School and served as Majorette. She then went on to attend East Mississippi Junior College. She served as a civil servant for the United States Postal Service for 38+ years. She was a member of Scooba Community Church where she served as an organist for over 50 years. She was devoted to the Lord and her church, and adored her church family. She was dedicated to recognizing service members and farmers, founding the Freedom Tree in Scooba, adjacent to the post office, where she is honored with a plaque. She was also a participant and encouraged others to participate in the Veterans Memorial Walk in Kemper County. In addition to being involved with Veterans events, she spent time writing poetry and was involved in many community gatherings, such as being the Grand Marshall in the 2022 Christmas parade. Mary Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, John Lyle Briggs and Clara Jan-Marie Miller; grandchildren, John Ross Briggs, Nicole Marie Briggs, and William Oliver Miller; sister-in-law, Katrina LeGette; cousin, Diane LeGette; cousin, Stephen Burris; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her former husband of 28 years, J.K. Briggs Jr.; grandchildren, Mary Hope and Emma Grace Miller; parents, Bascom Lyle and Freddie Marie Borum LeGette; and siblings, Roy Lynn LeGette and Becky LeGette Brooks.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Scooba Community Church at P.O. Box 112, Scooba, MS 39358 or Tunnel to Towers at www.t2t.org.
Visitation will be held an hour prior to service at the church.
