Services for John Kenneth “Jr.” Briggs Jr. will be Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at Briggs Chapel Memorial Church in Porterville, at 11:00 am. Bro. C.A. Farmer and Bro. Jesse Whigham will be officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Briggs, 77, died February 10, 2022, at John C. Stennis Memorial Hospital. Webb & Stephens Funeral Home – Dekalb is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of almost 25 years, Dianne; his son John Lyle Briggs; daughter Clara Jan-Marie Briggs Miller; son Danny L. Denham (Edie); daughters Dena McNeal (Lance), and Lannie Denham; grandchildren John Ross Briggs, Nicole Marie Briggs, William Oliver Miller, Brad Denham, Luke McDonald, Nick McDonald, Josh Denham, Jesse Whigham, Mary Margaret Whigham, and BreAnn Kelly; several great grandchildren; his mother Clara Edwards Briggs, and a sister Ruby Marie McCullough.
He was preceded in death by his father John Kenneth Briggs Sr., a son Jeff Corey Denham, along with twin granddaughters Mary Hope Miller and Emma Grace Miller.
Jr. attended Dekalb High School, East Mississippi Community College, then Mississippi State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a minor in Psychology. He then returned to Dekalb High School where he taught Math. He later went to Kemper Academy as a Math teacher. He was owner of the family store, Briggs 5 Point in Scooba. He was also the branch manager of the Merchant’s and Farmers Bank in Scooba. He served on the Kemper County Economic Development Committee as well as being a director for the Tennessee Tombigbee River Waterway Management District. He was the owner of Heritage Financial Services, served as a board member of the Briggs Chapel Cemetery Committee, and was a member of the Scooba United Methodist Church. He was also the recipient of the EMCC Distinguished Service Award.
