Dorothy Ann Gainey

UNION, Mississippi - Dot Gainey, age 82, passed away peacefully at Neshoba General Nursing Home in Philadelphia, Mississippi on Thursday, October 5, 2023. She was born Dorothy Ann Hillman at home in Conehatta, Mississippi on September 30, 1941. Dot was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and a beloved friend to many. She was hardworking and helpful, always ready to lend a hand.

Dot is survived by her husband, Malcom Gainey, her son Stephen (Julie) Gainey of Gulfport, MS, her daughter Stephanie (Jeff) Reece of Anna, TX, and her grandchildren Justin (Sarah) Reece, Katherine and Hill Gainey and great-grandchildren Meadow and Arlo Reece. Dot is also survived by her sister Nell (Jim) Williams of Natchez, MS, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pauline Hillman, her father, Frank James Hillman, her brothers Olan Smith, Alvin Smith, Junior Smith, Ed Smith, and Buddy Hillman.

Dot graduated as the valedictorian from Conehatta High School in 1959. She worked many jobs over the years including at the Shirt Factory in Union, the Coat Factory in Sebastopol, and at home on the farm. She found joy in supporting her son Stephen in basketball and her daughter Stephanie in cheerleading.  She especially loved cooking for family gatherings and making desserts.

Services will be held at Webb-Stephens Funeral Home in Union on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Visitation will begin at 11:30 pm, followed by the Funeral Service at 12:30 pm. Dot will be laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Newton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, your church or charity of choice.
