Darthelia Butts “Dot” Hollingsworth left for her eternal home on April 23, 2024, at the age of 94. She was born in Union on July 5, 1929, to Edward Olen and Caddie Lee (Hudson) Butts.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 68 years, Freddie Joe Hollingsworth; her siblings, Oswald Butts (Louva), Marjorie Gordon (Earl), and Kay Gossett (Jack); Mother & Father-in-Law, Ruby & Barto Hollingsworth; and Brothers/Sisters-in-Law, Rudolph Fountain, Clell Hall, Aubrey Nicholson, Shirley & James Allen, and Harold & Marie Hollingsworth.
She is survived by her children, Fred Allen Hollingsworth (Fran) of New Orleans, Louisiana; Dianne Hollingsworth Clemons (Mark) of Kerrville, Texas; and Jane Hollingsworth Space (Chuck) of Austin, Texas; sisters, Letha Hall and Sue Fountain; Sister-in-Law, Charlotte Nicholson; eight grandchildren, Holly Hollingsworth Cooney (Rob); Heather Hollingsworth (Pete); Kim Hollingsworth (Melissa); Kyle Hollingsworth; Doug Clemons; Lauren Clemons Thompson (Shaun); Christopher Space (Traysi); and Carter Space; along with twelve great-grandchildren, Joey Cooney, Charlie Cooney, Maddie Cooney, Willa Thompson, Miles Hollingsworth, Anders Hollingsworth, Caleb Hollingsworth, Kason Myers-Andrews, Zadok Thompson, Ezekiel Thompson, Rose Thompson, and Mei Space; and many loved nieces and nephews.
She loved to brag that she was the longest (not oldest!) member of Union First Baptist Church and graduated from Union High School. She served her beloved church family as a leader in WMU, a long-time high school girls and adult women Sunday School teacher and served on the UFBC Pastor Search Committee. She and Freddie Joe were instrumental in starting the SALT ministry at UFBC and loved their years serving as officers for the UHS Band Booster Club. Dot also loved her time with the Union Garden Club and was an award-winning volunteer of Laird Hospital.
She provided devoted, loving care for all of her family in sickness and health. It’s well known that her happiest years were spent at the dental office working for Dr. James McKinnon and Dr. Rex Warnick as a chairside assistant and later with her “own room” as the dental hygienist. She excelled at spending time caring for her beautiful yard and flowers and endured canning, freezing and sharing all the vegetables Freddie Joe grew abundantly. She and Freddie Joe enjoyed several years of traveling during retirement to locations around the United States and Europe.
She loved structure, and her discipline was an example for us all. Her later days were meticulously defined by Bible study, prayer and singing from the Baptist Hymnal (to keep her voice strong!), watching sermons online, following her Netflix series of choice, and many games of Candy Crush which she “crushed”, almost reaching level 10,000 before passing.
The family would like to express special thanks to all of the incredible people of Union and the First Baptist Church that loved, enjoyed and watched after our mother all these years. Words of appreciation are inadequate.
Pallbearers for Dot’s service will be Carter Space, Joey Cooney, Charlie Cooney, Shaun Thompson, Jonas Moore, Glenn Nicholson, Mark Nicholson, Marty Hollingsworth; with Brent Fountain and Todd Fountain serving as Honorary Pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dot’s honor and memory to Union First Baptist Church, Mississippi-Building Fund, or to the SALT Ministry Fund.
The staff of Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-Union is grateful for the opportunity to honor Dot’s memory and to serve her family during this time.
