Clarence “Shug” Julian Cranford, 84, of Quitman, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Diversicare of Quitman.
Shug was born to Clarence Milo and Velma Bertha (Napp) Cranford on November 4, 1941, in Stonewall. He was a member of the last graduating class of Stonewall High School in 1961. Shug was engaged in some aspect of law enforcement for his entire life, from Chief of Police of Stonewall, Deputy for Clarke County and the City of Quitman, and Special Agent for the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics. Even after retirement, he went on to work as a Security Officer at Dart and Rush Hospital. He was also an avid rabbit hunter, spending more time running them than hunting them, along with his good friend, Johnny McMahan. Shug will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Shug is survived by a host of his beloved nieces and nephews, friends, and his faithful canine companions, Trixie and Boogy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Milo and Velma Bertha (Napp) Cranford; and his sisters, Lula Mae Cranford McKee and Eva Cranford Duell.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Shug on Friday, January 2, 2026, beginning at 11:00 am at Harmony Baptist Church in Quitman, MS. Friends and family are invited to come and celebrate Shug’s life and share their memories of him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be made in Shug’s honor to Harmony Baptist Church or to a favorite charity of your choice.
